4. Valid Commercial Insurance & PUC

Permit & Checkpoint FAQs

How much do Ladakh permits cost per person in 2026?
For Indian nationals, statutory UT Ladakh fees consist of: UT Environmental Fee ₹300, Red Cross Fund ₹100, and Wildlife Protected Area Fee ₹20 per person per day. For a typical 7-day itinerary, the total statutory fee is ₹540 per person. Foreign nationals applying for Protected Area Permits (PAP) pay ₹300 Environment Fee, ₹100 Red Cross, plus ₹50 per day Wildlife fee, along with mandatory local agency processing.
Can foreign nationals visit Hanle or Umling La?
Under current Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) guidelines, foreign passport holders (including OCI and PIO cardholders) are not granted permits to visit Hanle, Umling La, Chushul, or Demchok due to proximity to the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Foreigners are permitted to visit Leh, Sham Valley, Nubra Valley (up to Turtuk/Tyakshi), Pangong Tso (up to Merak), and Tso Moriri (via Chumathang and Mahe Bridge).
Why are physical photocopies strictly mandatory at Ladakh checkpoints?
Checkpoints in Ladakh (South Pullu, North Pullu, Khalsar, Tangtse, Loma) operate in severe high-altitude dead zones with zero cellular connectivity. Army and police personnel physically collect and file a hardcopy photocopy of your permit and ID into manual logbooks for border defense tracking and rescue manifests. Digital copies on smartphones are not accepted.
